“Doe in Estrus”, Does it work?
(Submitted by Rick Kratzke, Whitetail Woods. Rick submitted this a few days back and I am just getting around to posting it. You can stop over at his site and see how his season is progressing… Paul)
I have always had a Like or Dislike opinion when it comes to hunting scents. Some times they work and some times they don’t but, I always try to keep an open mind such as in this case.
Now I went to Walmart after work last night and originally was going to get some Tink’s but all I saw was empty hooks.
Wildlife Research Center had some still there called “Doe in Estrus”. I heard a lot about them but honestly have not tried any of their products.
This is what they say on their website,
- Natural Doe Urine with Estrus Secretions.
- Carefully collected from whitetail does.
- Triggers the sexual attraction instinct of Whitetail Bucks.
- Brings in bucks aroused.
I figure what the heck I might as well try it. There has been other hunters in this area so I need to better my odds how ever I can to bring in a deer. Today is Saturday and I am out hunting and using the “Doe in Estrus”. I hope to have good news for you later on.
Deers Everywhere!
Ok, everywhere but in my freezer! I have yet to tag a deer so far this season. It’s rainy and the wind is howling this morning, so I didn’t get out there like I should. I know..I know… Won’t get one that way! I just had time to grab my pistol and make it to the stand yesterday evening, but no luck.
They are out there taunting me. Diving in front of my truck as I drive down the gravel roads. Leaving tracks in my yard while I sleep. Posing for my trail cams like they are at glamor shots!
I swear I can here them snickering from behind the bushes when I am in my stand. He who laughs last you sneaky deers, he who laughs last!
Brother-in-law shot a really heavy 8 pointer opening morning. Sister, aka “Lead Slingin Lucy”, shot a nice doe too. My chance will come. I just need to get back out there. I had better quit for now. Time to go sit in a tree and act like a nut!
What Deer season means to Me
(Submitted by Rick Kratzke, Whitetail Woods)
You know with deer season around us all and me patiently waiting for my turn to come which happens to be November 18th., shotgun/rifle season. I have been watching quite a few hunting dvd’s and television shows.
I always do that especially this time of year. Getting myself pumped up like I really need a dvd to do that. What I want to mention though is “What Deer season means to me”. I see these shows on TV and DVD and they always seem to put emphasis on the trophy buck and if you want to put meet in the freezer than fill a doe tag.
I’m sorry but, the way I see it is any deer no matter whether it is a 10 pointer, spike buck or even a doe they are all considered trophies to me.
I don’t hunt for the antlers even though I do admit to collecting them. I am just as happy if I shoot a doe. I really don’t understand why bone (antlers) is so important to a lot of people. I think if you sit back and think you will admire the Whitetail Deer for what it really is and not what it grows on their heads every year.
Please, don’t get me wrong I love antlers just as much as the next guy but I also love everything else that is connected to them. The way a whitetail can adapt and overcome almost any adversity in their surrounding. They truly are in my opinion the most majestic big game animal around and should be treated as such.
The way I hunt is 100% wild and 100% fairchase which has been at the front of some discussions But that is not the point I am trying to make. I don’t shoot anymore than what my family can eat in a years time. I do my best to not let any part of that animal go to waste. If I am able to tag an extra deer I donate it to a local soup kitchen.
So, I think you get the idea of what Deer season means to me. We as hunters are always in the lime light if that is what you call it. We unfortunately have to show that we are all not just out for the bone that we do admire and care about the whitetail deer and also care about the environment that they live in.
Just one more thought and that is,
BE SAFE – THINK BEFORE YOU SHOOT – GOOD LUCK TO YOU AND EVERYONE ELSE THAT VENTURES OUT THIS DEER SEASON
Wooley Deer Booger Swamp
If you aren’t a hunter, let me tell ya somethin’. Deer archery season is quickly approaching. It’s that time of year when I like to hang around in a tree and act like a nut! I plant food plots, I practice shooting my bow, I fix old deer stands, and I swat lots of mosquitoes! (mosquito is spanish for little fly… I wonder how you say “Pain in the butt” in Spanish!)
I tell Honey Bunches I am off to fix deer stands.
“Don’t forget your swatter”, She says. I am glad she reminded me. Before I head off to the deep woods, I grab my combination “cow/mosquito whackin stick”.
The extra rains have made it easy for the little buggers to reproduce this year. As I enter the woods, I begin yelling and thrashing the brush. It is well known that surprising Salt Creek mosquitoes may result in an attack. I yell and thrash until I get to the first deer stand. Looks a little loose, I think to myself, I better tighten those straps.
While looking up and approaching the stand I lose my concentration for just a second. That was all it took. I trip over a baby mosquito. The juvenile buzzes in a high pitch to alert the adults. Now I hear the big ones coming. The leaves tremble as they hover above the canopy. I have come between them and their young, I run for it!
At the edge of the timber, I dive into my truck. “Just in time”, I say to myself as the mosquitoes crash into the windows. I drive like a mad man for home. The windshield wipers smear the attackers as I flee. It was pretty unsettling, but unlike many Salt Creekians, I made it out alive!
I careen into the driveway, leap from the truck, and slam the house door behind me. Honey Bunches asks, “Where’s your stick?” Catching my breath, I tell her I dropped it. “If you wanna go look for it, it should be by the first deer stand in the timber ‘, Thanks Honey Bunches!
