Harvest is Done… At Last!
While not without plenty of trials and tribulations, the corn is in. It started as hopefully as it usually does. It seems I am ready to roll with harvest every year, my mind omits the struggles from the previous season. This season was no different. This time however, I took notes.
Right off the bat, the big tractor lost oil pressure. Down to one tractor to pull the gravity flow wagons, I was forced to borrow another tractor from a neighbor.
Not once, but twice, the stirrators in the drying bin quit. This required expensive service trips, new parts, and quite a bit of downtime.
Even with tracks on the combine, a simple washout stopped progress. We broke a chain trying to pull this little mistake out. (that
reminds me… need to buy brother-in-law a new chain)
Oh well, time to rejoice in the completion of the harvest. I just need to move a truck and take down some augers tomorrow. Another harvest will be complete. This year will be the closest I ever finished to deer season. It’s time for some rest. I need to check my sights on my deer gun in the morning.
Pickin Some Corn
We finally got started picking field corn this week. Pretty dang muddy in places. So much so, the neighbor brought in his combine with
tracks on it. So far he hasn’t been stuck in the mud but, he did fall off in a hole! All the rains caused a new washout and one of the tracks fell in. 3 Tractors (and several chains) later, he was back to work. We almost had one grain bin full but disaster struck again…
Last week I had someone come work on the stirrators in this bin. (a stirrator is just a set of augers used to stir the grain while air is blown through the bin to dry the grain) Now that the bin has several thousand bushels of damp corn in it, I discover the stirrator is not moving around the bin. It just sits in one spot and pulls grain up from the bottom. Anybody know where to find a stirrator motor on a Sunday? Me either!
I have a hopper bottom truck coming to empty the corn from another bin so we can continue picking. I had better close for now as the combine will soon be running again. Wish me luck!
I Can’t Get Nowhere!
While trying to farm and build the house, a song keeps coming to mind. Not a well known or overly-played song but, the lyrics make me laugh. Many of you will not recognize this “Tractors” song. Here’s a couple lines… “Oh Me Oh My Oh You, What’s A Poor Boy Spose’d To Do? It Takes All Night, There’s Somethin’ Wrong, To Do What I Used To Do All Night Long, I Can’t Get Nowhere, I Can’t Get Nowhere…” HA HA, Still funny!
Tomorrow’s plan is to finish cutting beans, haul out a load of corn from last year and hopefully start pickin’ this years corn. I need to sort the bigger calves off and haul them to the sale barn. I need to get my roof done. I need to sight in my gun for deer season. I need to fix Mom’s dryer. I need to change the oil in farm truck.
Oh Me Oh My Oh You…
